Summary of special contribution
- Development of space science courses for the new space science
track for the physics major (2003-2005). This is a collaborative work of
many departments and NASA affiliated institutions. The space science curriculum
is going through different stages of approval by the university community.
- Development of Computational Space Science focusing on Space
Weather and Magnetosphere modeling. This is a direct result of the Space
Weather Summer Institute that was held at Boston University where I participated,
as well as the Space Weather Weekend that was held at AAMU where two students
and myself participated. The main magentosphere code is now loaded on several
computers, and it will be accessible to students beginning the spring of
2006.
- Astrophysical observation infrastructure development: Thanks
to the NASA space science program, NC A&T university has and will have
capability to develop observational astrophysics and space science research
and education program.
- Developed Physics 280: Introduction to Space Science.
- Information technology enhanced instruction: Information technology,
particularly the world-wide-web, is used to disseminate lessons, homework,
and information relevant to the course. The web is also used to enhance
of student participation, and student advising through online feed back
mechanism. Currently, the courses listed above are being developed on the
web at http://hoth.ncat.edu/~michael/physics/ (on going) <.ol>
Academic advising and counseling Evidences are shown for the
following activities
- Developed the Physics A Team (PAT), to motivate my students
and to help them succeed in Physics 241 (on going). Please check (http://hoth.ncat.edu/~michael/pat).
- Advise students in research on/off campus: I have advised
several students who are directly involved in my research both on campus
and off campus. (on going)
- Provide all A&T students with information about opportunities
in Science Engineering,
- Developed the Virtual Center for Integration of Research
and Learning (on going): I have designed a website that allows students
to search for summer internship programs around the Country (on going). (http://hoth.ncat.edu/~michael/reu)
- Introduce students to role model scientists and fellow
students who excel in science research (on going). I maintain a website dedicated
to Ron McNair, with the virtual center.
- Help students organize their resumes, and write letters
of recommendations As will be demonstrated several students are being admitted
in programs that are related to their fields by writing letters of recommendations,
by establishing contacts with the sources, and by encouraging colleagues
outside NC A&T to admit our students in their programs (on-going)
Research and Education Funding
- Research Productivity: I have brought in over $1,260,00 since
joining NC A&T, Over $1,000.000 since I became tenured. In addition
I am co-principal investigator of several successful grants and a senior
scientist in the Nanoscale Engineering research.

Service to the University
Special grants and programs brought to NC A&T
State University (on going)
- Capacity Building Partnership for Research and Education
in Spaces Science (CB-PRESS): Part of the application of this program is
indicated under "special contribution to course and curriculum development".
CBPRES is a NASA funded projected aimed at developing space science curriculum
and space related research programs. It is a three year $795,000 project.
The physics curriculum with concentration in space science is approved
by the College of Arts and Sciences
- Low Temperature Physics Laboratory This laboratory
produces cryogenic temperatures (-272oC), to study the electronic properties
of high temperature superconductors, colossal magnetoresistance materials,
heavy fermions and Kondo insulators. Currently the laboratory houses state-of
-the-art meters, power sources, computers and high grade low temperature
inserts worth over $120, 000. Additional funding of $200,000 was obtained
from ONR prior to 1999. Recently additional grant $200,000 is expected from
the collaboration of NC A&T, Prairie View A&M University and the
National High Magnetic Field Laboratory. Further more Mrs. Marsha Walters
graduated with MS in physics, and a second student, Ms. Talisha Haywood is
in the pipeline. In addition my successful use of the National High Magnetic
Field Laboratory in Tallahassee FL, is creating new opportunities for undergraduate
and graduate students. These opportunities will be realized in less than a
year.
- Science on Wheels: Developed a Science on Wheels (SoW)

For the purpose of collaborative research, teaching and learning I have
developed what is called the Virtual Center for Integrating Research and
Learning (http://hoth.ncat.edu/~michael/teach)
